Often, when our team starts discussing a new potential collaboration with a translation agency, we are asked to perform a test translation.
I think this is a great opportunity for any translator to start off on the right foot when dealing with an agency since the test will give you an idea of what your potential new client thinks is representative of the kind of work they will be assigning to you.
So we always welcome test translations.
Of course, special cases require some prior background check (for instance on ProZ’s Blue Board or on Payment Practices) to make sure that the test request is done in good faith.
Have we passed every single test translation we ever performed? Certainly not. Have we learned something whenever we failed a translation test? Most certainly so!
